We were picked up in Marrakech, made numerous stops at interesting points along the drive to Zagora (where we spent the first night). The hotel we stayed at was really lovely and secluded.

Then the highlight was the excursion to Erg Chegaga. Mohammad had the great idea to do a picnic in the Sahara rather than another restaurant lunch. So we stopped at a butcher and bought lamb chop and grilled them on our own in the middle of the Sahara!

The accommodations at Erg Chagaga were lovely. As was the camel riding and star gazing at night.

My only recommendation to a future traveler is go for longer than 3 days/2 nights if you can. I wish I had had at least 1 more day in the desert.

I was given lots of advice on different trips offered,... read more and settled for a 1 day private tour including quad biking and a romantic dinner for 2 in the Agafay desert, then a 2 day private tour to Essaouira from Marrakech.

Our driver Mohammad for both trips was excellent. He was very knowledgeable, polite, flexible, nothing was too much trouble and even though we can speak French he was happy to talk to us in English (his English was very good).

The 1 day trip to Agafay took us quad biking as a private tour away from any big groups. The company used were very professional, safe and fun. Then onto a camp in the desert where we had the most amazing private dinner in a tent looking out over the desert. Again the company used was superb, attentive staff with great food and polite musicians.

The 2 day trip to Essaouira from Marrakech built in stops at cooperatives to see how argan oil is produced, (No hard sell) then on arrival checked us in to a fabulous Riad called Madada (available through the Royal package we chose). The trip included lunch and dinner at local restaurants and a private guided tour of the town. Our guide Hassan was excellent. We were given plenty of time to explore by ourselves but Mohammad our driver was always available if we needed help or to take us to the restaurants.

Overall our experience was 1st class, a credit to exploring in Morocco. Thank you Rene for guiding us through and arranging the booking , and for being flexible when we had to make changes). Thank you Mohammad for being an excellent guide.

There were many highlights but top ones include the most delicious lunch in a Berber family kasbah (best bread ever), seeing how Berber rugs are made at a cooperative and haggling for a small one, camel ride, tented camp, sand surfing and quad bikes in the Sahara, visiting Nomads in the desert and eating Nomad pizza, walking (& climbing) through the Monkey Fingers in the Dades Gorge, Ait Ben Haddou & the Atlas Studios .I could go on! We loved every minute and arrived back in Marrakech exhausted but very happy. If you are doing this trip we advise a day or two to relax afterwards!! Three days are quite long and passed so fast, I was so happy and lucky to meet the others members sharing the van, best experience ever!
