Nkob
The Village of Forty-Five Kasbahs
South of Agdz and east of Jbel Kissane lies Nkob, a small Amazigh village that seems lifted from a storybook. Known as the village of 45 kasbahs, Nkob is a living museum of southern Moroccan architecture. Earthen towers rise against the backdrop of the Jebel Saghro mountains, their silhouettes glowing red under the desert sun.
The village sits at the crossroads between the Draa Valley and the Saghro region — a landscape that shifts from palm oasis to volcanic plateau in just a few kilometers. Life here follows the rhythm of the seasons: farmers tend date palms and small fields in the valley below, while nomadic herders guide their goats and camels across the rocky uplands.
đź’ˇ Traveler’s Insight:
Wander through Nkob’s old quarter in the late afternoon, when the mud-brick kasbahs catch the fading light. The texture of the walls, the smell of woodsmoke, and the echo of distant voices create an atmosphere that feels suspended in time.
Nkob is also a hub for Amazigh culture. Its people belong primarily to the Aït Atta tribe, renowned for their fierce independence and rich oral traditions. The annual Moussem festival, held in autumn, celebrates their heritage through music, dance, and storytelling — an event that brings together villagers and nomads from across the region.
🌍 Did You Know?
Nkob sits along what was once the Route des Kasbahs, the historic network linking Morocco’s oases and caravan towns. Many of the 45 kasbahs remain privately owned and inhabited, their walls carefully restored using traditional techniques.
From Nkob, the desert horizon begins to open once more. The air feels drier, the light sharper, and the sense of anticipation stronger — the dunes of Zagora and beyond await, carrying the promise of the Sahara’s vast silence.
