Cedar Forest
Among the Ancient Trees
Stretching across the highlands between Azrou and Ifrane lies one of the most enchanting landscapes in Morocco — the Cedar Forest. Here, towering Atlas cedars reach skyward, their branches spreading wide like open arms. The air is crisp and perfumed with resin, and sunlight filters through the canopy in golden shafts that dance on the forest floor.
The forest is home to Morocco’s most famous residents — the Barbary macaques, or “Magots.” These social monkeys, once found throughout North Africa, now survive mainly here and in a few remote pockets of the Rif Mountains. Watching them leap between the trees or sit calmly on the roadside, grooming one another, is a delight for travelers of all ages.
đź’ˇ Traveler’s Insight:
Bring some fruit or nuts to share — but hand them out gently and respectfully. The macaques are wild, not tame, and part of what makes this forest so special is the sense of coexistence between human visitors and nature.
Beyond its wildlife, the forest plays an essential ecological role. Its dense canopy regulates rainfall and temperature, feeding the rivers that sustain life in the surrounding valleys. Locals often gather wild herbs and mushrooms here, carrying on traditions that stretch back centuries.
🌍 Did You Know?
Cedar wood from these forests was once prized by Phoenician shipbuilders and later used to construct parts of Morocco’s royal palaces. Its scent and strength have long been symbols of endurance.
In autumn, the forest glows in shades of amber and green, while in winter, snow covers the branches in silence. For many travelers, it’s a highlight of their journey north — a tranquil pause before descending toward the imperial cities.
